Project Runaway

Two types of shantung silk fabric, 9 girls, 9 outfits!

The girls are each tasked to design their own “jie mei” dresses, using dove grey and a delicious peony pink. It was between the dove grey or a weird aquamarine – to be on theme with the official colourways. Thank goodness I wasn’t too colourblind on my second trip to Chinatown.

I think the girls and the dresses are going to look so pretty on WeDay. :-)

The official bridal party consists of :

1) Jess and Shirley – My oldest friends from Cedar Girls (they are possibly also the oldest in the party! hehe)
2) Nai Yen and Louisa – Classmates from CJC
3) Tracy and Lelian – Survivors from Raffles!
4) Wendy and Sharon – New found friends (or they found me!)
5) Kat – Survivor from Renewal Day Spa..eeps!

So there you go, an eclectic mix of friends from difference phases of my growing up and working life!

Mum said 9 girls = long long long long (长长久久)… I bet if I told her that there are eight of them she will just say very 三八!

Bed Peace

Plenty of kodak moments that we missed  — like getting avalanched with auspicious-ness at the old-school wedding prep haven, Minah, and erm, checking colour proofs of our wedding invites. Thankfully, this wasn’t one of them. The Bed got in a couple a weeks ago and it bang on fit! Phew!
No, it's not me

August Updates

It’s been weeks since the last update – we’ve been busy…er…doing stuff…like choosing wallpaper for the room (who knew choosing a simple off-white design would be so tough!), watching money no enough, followed by 12 Lotus, then reminding ourselves at the end of each weekend that there are tons of things we’ve not done..GULP…and August is coming to an end….GULP…and Pau Lin just reminded me that September is coming…eeps!! Here’s an update of what we’ve completed and again some that would be carried over to September:

1) Wedding bands – we went to get them engraved today – the lady at the store asked what do we want to have inscribed on the rings, I was thinking “within you’ll remain” (ok ok kidding) and A just went “A&C” followed by the wedding date. The lady then looked at the size of my ring and went “in case no space, can we take out the “20″ from “2008″…of course! heaven forbid in our old age we will forget the date and think that we got married in 1908 :-P

2) Wedding cake – we met the Tans last night and Mrs Tan was so excited when I passed her the silver ribbons…now we just need to decide where the prettiest wedding cake will be sitting on the “oh happy day.”

3) Wedding dress – 1st fitting on 26 Sep eeps!!

4) Shoes – we both saw our dream shoes today at Taka – all we need to do next is a) get media discount from Mr Ferragamo b) Ms C to decide on the pair of silver lovelies…way to go Mr Weitzman!

5) Kids’ outfits – Getting the girls’ dresses poofed up – hopefully Mr Wu can help with his brilliant can cans…

6) Bridal Party’s outfits – A actually went with me to Chinatown in search of fabrics for the bridal party – we almost settled for a turqoise blue shantung silk fabric, it was a good thing that I was my usual indecisive self, although I did decide not to buy on that day :-P . I then went back with Jess and Chok 2 weeks later and picked up shantung silk in soft grey and get this..hot pink!! no prizes for guessing who picked that colour..:-P

7) Wedding Invites – Mr Bossman and Ms Tsui still working on this one – hope to have this wrapped up and sent to printers this week..

8 ) Chinese Wedding band – I think we are finally making headways with this one, hopefully settled by Sept!

9) Register with ROM – Must e-file (like income tax)…how romantic…

10) BOOK a JP – The brief is – grandfatherly, good sense of humour, helpful, sincere, speaks good English…but must be Chinese! Need to get this done this week too…

The list goes on… next week…off to get the wedding biscuits, buy my 12 outfits, shoes, undergarments… to fill my modern-day interpretation of the bridal trousseau (instead of a rosewood chest, we are making do with a dark grey Samsonite) Woohoo! I LOVE CHINESE TRADITIONS!!!

Some random pics of the month…

Bands On The Run

Who’d have thought that the hunt for wedding bands would entail heated debates on taste and symbolism, a serendipitous working trip, and the dodging of a typhoon?!

No thanks to a ya-ya-papaya Taka auntie with her ominous assessment of our search (“people make order at least 7 months before, you know”), and Chazza’s intense gym sessions which shaved 0.2mm off her ring finger, it took many frantic Chaz calls – one that eventually led to Hong Kong – to secure the precious metals. And this ain’t even the half of it.

A working trip to Hong Kong planned weeks before this wedding band situation meant that I got a free ride to collect. Once there, however, the weatherman foretold that a typhoon would hit the island on Wednesday, my only free day and the day of the return flight! But thanks to some deft time slicing by yours truly, an hour was milked from the first day to work the plastic and hey presto! The A Lot Of The Rings Problem was solved. So all together now….. HENG AH!!!

Remains Of That Day

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Thanks to a thoroughly vibeless ring box, I had to score something else. And the (only other available) replacement was a vintage perfume bottle holder which, as the results showed, totally rocked, hehe.

The alternate reality (Sorry TJS. Great ring. Not so great ring box):

And now these two mini sniff stashettes need a new home…

838.95

After months and weeks of postponing the “Mr & Mrs Wong meet Mr & Mrs Yap” session, it finally happened this weekend! We went to Jia Wei – a Chinese restaurant (what else would it be :-P ) at Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel. The dinner was booked at 7.30pm, and I had to give the Yaps heads up that the Wongs are punctual folks, so “please don’t be late hor…”. As it turned out, the btb and gtb got there late and both families were left waiting at the lobby long enough to speculate if the other party were the Yaps or the Wongs…

After 5 minutes of intros, we quickly settled into our seats – we were assigned to the “Table” where the two ladies would be discussing the deal during the 7-course dinner. It was strange to see my mum sitting next to Alvo’s mum, both smiling and not knowing what to say to each other, then Alvo broke the ice and said, “Um so you guys know what to do ah?” Which worked like magic! Both ladies laughed and started talking about where to get biscuits, porklegs, red packets, clogs, ring, bedside lamps, and besides that “anything, lah!” The evening went just as we’ve expected, lots of “aiya, no need lah” and “oh, simple simple can already”. Phew!

Time to cross some tasks off the checklist:

1) Kids’ outfits – Done! Found the dresses in Hong Kong – same ones I saw at Forum were going at more than 2x the price and got the boys some really cute 3-piece suits. Woohoo!

2) The Bed – After 3 weekends of IMM, Courts and Robinsons, we finally settled on one last weekend with the help of Alvo’s mum. We also spent a bomb on bed linen… Alvo’s mum is a fan of Sheridan, so we will be sleeping on some creme de la creme of bed sheets and quilt covers!

Next week – off to check out invitation cards at Shangri-la… time really flies when you’re having fun!

I Can’t Believe It’s July!

Yes, four more months to the wedding and we still have tons of unfinished tasks. June was not very productive but I think we managed to accomplish enough especially major ones e.g. colour of the wall paint for the room, The Bed (well almost), and finally…my gowns!! I think I got through that by the skin of my nose (before Ted throws me out to the Tanjong Pagar ah lian shops), eeks!

Some tasks that would be carried over are:

1) Little one’s outfits – I went to Robinsons today, but the sales auntie told me to go to OG..hmm
2) Finalise the guestlist and send save-the-date evite – needs to be done this week!
3) Mr & Mrs Wong meet Mr & Mrs Yap – Not done last month either, yikes!
4) Wedding Entourage outfits – still mulling over this one because I can’t imagine the girls sporting the same pink bustier dress, especially Charlotte :-P
5) Wedding stationery – the talented mr bossman is still working on this one
6) Chinese wedding band -Hmm…

July will be a really busy month, on the top of the stuff we didn’t complete last month – these are those that we scheduled for this month:

1) Book the JP
2) Register with ROM
3) Start working on the cheesy slideshow of childhood silly pics
4) Programme / Itinerary for WeDay

Hopefully we will fare better this month, otherwise August will be crazyyy…

The Making of a Groom

This is a belated post about last weekend (28 June 2008) – Alvo had his first fitting for both his day suit and tux at Pimabs (no whitesocks, boohoo), halfway through the session he turned to me and asked, “Look like Jil Sander model hor?” I nodded my head dutifully and replied, “Yes, yes!”. In less than 30 mins, Leslie was done making his checks with his wristful of pins and we were out the door proceeding to our next task – good lace hunting at Arab Street.

Armed with a task bestowed by the great master of bridal gowns, I had to go to Arab Street to get my own lace for the cheong sum – just when I thought it would be a 2-hour adventure (judging by my track record of indecisiveness) – the task was completed in less than 10 mins! I call it love at 1st sight, with the support of Alvo and the wedding fund. We spent the rest of the day in shock at our extravagant purchase – the lace was S$170/m and we needed 3.5m, GULP! I hereby declare the unborn cheongsum the next Wong family heirloom!

The Dress Dilemma

How do you drive your bridal gown designer crazy? By surfing 1,001 bridal websites and collecting enough gown ideas to start your own wedding gown website!

I had a dress crisis yesterday when I couldn’t decide on a silhouette – He couldn’t believe my inability to visualise a mermaid skirt under soft layers of fabric, cut in A-line. Are you confused already? I certainly was, and had to summon my fashionista friends to check if I’m slipping into my usual paranoia or plain stupidity – OR I might just be a step closer to my full transformation into a BRIDEZILLA.

I went to meet Sharon and had my post-Ted session and she helped shed some light on the choices, she is afterall someone who knows more about dresses than I do. Unfortunately my decision-making deficiency was going at full steam – after 2 hours of pork steak, sauerkraut, coke and beer (she was drinking, not me) — I went home a tad less confused and 1% body fat heavier. Woohoo!!

I read somewhere that when you see the dress, you will know it is the ONE. Heck, I thought that applies only to the MAN. After chewing on it for almost 24 hours, I think I have unraveled the reason why — I’m confused because I’m suffering from wedding-gown-images-overload — and the reasons why I can’t visualise his design are a) I’ve never seen it before b) I have too many pictures of me in different skirts in my head c) there’s no such thing as a perfect dress! (according to Lian, as long as you are perfect, everything else will be perfect. Ahem. Nice.) Solution = Stop looking at “ideas”, “inspirations”, “dream wedding gowns” websites (maybe except Martha’s because her website has ewww gowns but great craft ideas) — Just leave it to the expert, and continue to enjoy the journey of thousand decisions that we need to make in the next 3 months. Yay!

Quick update – things to do this weekend:
1) Alvo’s 1st fitting – hello white socks!!
2) Visit Mr Heng – Hopefully Nam Nam has some ideas for Mrs Wong’s outfits
3) The matromonial um.. bed – maybe another visit to IMM if we have time

That’s all for now, till the next freak out session.
